Brownfields in a Box

"Brownfields in a Box" is a multidisciplinary education module. It features an interactive CD-ROM that allows students and participants to work individually or in teams to research "real-world" situations and to find solutions to a brownfields problem. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines brownfields as "abandoned, idled or under-used industrial and commercial facilities where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination."

Don't have a brownfields site in your area? This innovative learning tool can be applied to many enviromentally related issues. For example, a tribal community may utilize Brownfields in a Box to investigate and develop solutions to local water quality issues.

Students can enjoy role-playing as they act as city officials and citizens to solve environmental problems of Anyplace, USA. The training module targets junior and high school students and freshman and sophomore level college students.

"Brownfields in a Box" was developed by the Advanced Technology Environmental Education Center (ATEEC). A National Science Foundation Center of Excellence, ATEEC's purpose is to enhance environmental technology education in our nation's secondary schools and community colleges. The newly updated "Brownfields in a Box" features the Nahant Marsh Case Study. An EPA Superfund clean-up site, Nahant Marsh is one of only a handful of urban wetlands left along the Mississippi River. The marsh was used as a trap and skeet shooting range, resulting in tons of lead shot contaminating the site. Students research the site from the points of view of various stakeholders, interpret sampling data to assess risk, and then work toward consensus regarding the future use of the property. Class members integrate their math, science, communications, technology, and social skills in this real-life application of concepts. Students are then led to transfer their skills to problem-solving in their own communities.
