Defining the Field—Environmental Technology

Visit ATEEC's products section to download a free copy of our 2008 Defining Environmental Technology report.

ATEEC was funded by the National Science Foundation (DUE #0702439) to incorporate a Sustainable Energy Resource Center under the umbrella of the existing Environmental Technology Resource Center. To move towards this goal, the first major activity was to hold two national “Defining the Field” forums in Chicago--one for environmental technology and one for energy technology. The forums brought together educators, industry, researchers, and government representatives from across the country to help ATEEC analyze the role of technicians in these fields. The two updated reports:

  • Define the current field as it applies to technicians (two-year college degree or certificate level).
  • Develop a projection of future trends in the field.
  • Further definitize the field into occupational categories for technicians.
  • Outline underlying knowledge and skills that cut across all the occupational categories.
  • Identify technician-level occupational titles and job functions within each of those categories.

In the field of Environmental Technology, the occupational categories covered at the technician level are:

  • Air Quality

  • Emergency Preparedness & Response

  • Energy Technologies & Services

  • Environmental Information Management Systems

  • Environmental Laboratory Services

  • Environmental Site Management

  • Natural Resources Management

  • Safety & Health

  • Solid & Hazardous Waste Management

  • Wastewater Management

  • Water Supply & Quality

  • Sustainability
