Student Profiles

Thevepharkhorn Malyvong
by Athty Malyvong
My name is "Athty" in Laos and
pronounced like "Att-die.” I
received my certificate in Health,
Safety, and Environmental
Technology (HSET) in December
2005 (Magna Cum Laude), and
maintained a 3.92 GPA. I am
currently working toward an
A.A.S. and will pursue a higher
degree once I complete this goal.
My Division Director, Ms. Jehdia S.
Bottinelli, is a Certified Hazardous Material Manager
(CHM&M), Senior Level, and she has inspired and taught
me a lot about HAZMAT safety and pollution prevention
programs. She recommended taking the Health, Safety,
and Environmental Technology (HSET) program through
EICCD.
Career Goal
I am a HAZMAT Supply Specialist and analyze processes
and control procurement, receipt, storage, issue, and
dispose of all hazardous materials (HAZMAT) in our
region. I am striving to gain the education and
experience to fully take control of our program. One day
I hope to be a CHM&M and a director of a Regional
HAZMAT Management Division like my director.
Our job is directly involved with safety, HAZMAT, and
prevention pollution. We stock large quantities and line
items of HAZMAT and manage these items properly to prevent them from becoming hazardous waste (HAZWASTE). Based on our records, line items, excess,
and HAZWASTE have been greatly reduced during the last ten years. This reduction is due to a pollution prevention program known as Consolidated Hazardous
Material Re-utilization Inventory Management Program
(CHRIMP). CHRIMP is a mandatory program for all
naval installations.
I love my job and am happy that what I do directly
affects how and what we use. I have power to prevent
pollution, enhance safety at the workplace, and help
make the world a better place for future
generations and us.
HSET Online Courses
I believe the online course option is a great thing
because it gives busy people (like me) who cannot afford
time to attend traditional, face-to-face classes to take
them online, work on assignments, and take quizzes at
our own pace (as long as it is on time). I have wanted to
take college courses for the last 20 years but never could
because I was very busy with my family (a wife and two
children), my job, and travel for work (conferences,
giving lectures, and training). I did not know there were such
things as online courses prior to HSET. I
would have started taking online courses
long ago if I had known that they were
available. The online course option is a
win-win situation.
