Occupations

water sampling What are some occupations in the field of environmental technology?

ATEEC conducted a workshop in St. Louis (March 1996) to identify and define environmental technology (ET) occupations, particularly at the technician level. The workshop participants, who included industry people who themselves are in the environmental technology field, determined eleven categories of ET occupations. For each category, the participants brainstormed a list of representative occupations as well as some of the broad job functions performed in the occupations. All the workshop results are available to you as a free download from this Web site.

A wall chart of the Defining Environmental Technology

categories and occupations is also available from ATEEC. The price is $2.00 to cover handling.

About the Graphic

This photo from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory illustrates water sampling. One of the broad job functions that applies to many of the occupations in the ET field is the collection of samples from air, water, land, and biological materials. The samples are sent to environmental laboratories for analysis to determine possible contamination. Students in various environmental technology associate degree programs learn methods of sampling that contribute to reliable analysis and that ensure the sampler's personal safety.
