Core Curriculum Recommended by the ATEEC Fellows
The 1995 through 1997 ATEEC Fellows Institutes included steps taken to adopt an ATEEC Recommended Core Curriculum for Environmental Technology. The Core Curriculum, project included these phases:
- DACUM workshops to identify job tasks in several environmental technology occupations
- Determination of a comprehensive list of math, science, technology, communication, and critical thinking knowledge and skills underlying job tasks on the DACUMs
- Analysis leading to the minimum science, technical, communications, math and critical thinking knowledge and skills necessary to perform the entry-level environmental technology tasks.
- Review of national high school science, math, and technology standards for high school and two-year colleges
- Fellows recommendations led to adoption by ATEEC in June 1997 of the "ATEEC Recommended 4 + 2 Core Curriculum for Environmental Technology" (i.e., 4 years of high school courses and 2 years of college courses)
Note: The left menu has links to pages about the DACUM process and about Standards and Educational Reform.
Minimum Knowledge and Skills
The ATEEC Core Curriculum lists of minimum knowledge and skills for entry-level tasks, and is available free of charge in the Products section of this Web site.
ATEEC's Model Environmental Technology 4+2 Core Program
ATEECs recommend articulated core program for Environmental Technology education based on the recommendations made by the ATEEC Fellows. A 4 + 2 program includes four years of high school and two years of associate degree coursework.
The coursework enables students to move "seamlessly" through four years of high school and two years of an associates degree program. (Note: "Seamless" suggests an organized sequence that avoids gaps in students' knowledge and skills base.)
As a National Science Foundation Center, ATEEC's recommendations support the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges, the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Association of the Academy of Sciences, and the International Technology Education Association. The recommended core program also supports "Project 2061," of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. See the Curriculum Support menu on this Web Site for links to standards resources.
Recommended High School Program
An articulated high school program in Environmental Technology shall comprise, in conjunction with general education and national standard requirements, the courses/topics described below.
Mathematics: Equivalent of three years of mathematics that follow the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards, including such features as the use of real-world problems and integration across topics.
Science: Equivalent of four years of science which follow the National Science Education Standards and include the subject matter of:
- life science (biology, environmental science)
- physical science (chemistry, physics)
- earth and space sciences
Technical Core: Equivalent of at least two years of technology education courses that incorporate math, science, communications, and technology and follow the International Technology Education Association standards. |
Recommended Two-Year College Program
Note: Students who may later continue their studies in a four-year program should select courses that will meet baccalaureate degree requirements at the transfer institution.
Mathematics: Two semesters of mathematics that follow the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges, standards, to include:
- college-level technical/applied math
- statistics
Science: Four semesters of science with lab, including the following topical areas:
- inorganic chemistry
- organic chemistry
- biology/biological sciences
- choice of microbiology, environmental science/ecology, geology, applied physics, etc.
Technical Core: The knowledge and skills identified by ATEEC Fellows for the following topical areas:
- environmental technology concepts
- environmental regulations and compliance
- environmental health and safety
- environmental sampling and monitoring
and
- internship or capstone experience
- certifications:
- CPR/First Aid (typically required for employment)
- 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response worker training (typically required for employment; optional, but highly recommended)
Communications:
- technical communications, including technical writing and speech
- computer applications
